southbound to the beltway without delay. we're am -- as you leave 695, south of the airport toward 495 we're in good shape. aaron, eun, back to you. >> now back to our coverage of the violence in charlottesville. we're learning more about the man charged with murder for ramming his car into a group of protesters. 20-year-old alex fields will make his first court appearance today. fields was fascinated with naziism and idolized adolf hitler. >> this weekend's violence led to dozens of protests around our area. one of the biggest happened outside of the white house last night. demonstrators gathered to denounce hate and violence and to show their support for the people of charlottesville. >> this twitter account is identifying the people who participated in the rally this past weekend. the account is called yes, you're a racist and it has more than 250,00

now. it said one of the people identified lost his job as a result. right now, we have team coverage of the violence that took place this weekend in charlottesville. >> news 4's angie goff will have a look around the area. derrick ward will explain how charlottesville is healing this morning. derrick? >> reporter: good morning again. here at fourth and water street, the sun is rise on a quiet morning here. quiet, definitely comparison to how it was this weekend. we've seen the street sweepers making the rounds here. hasn't come down this street. chances are, any normal monday morning, it would make the circuit. not -- this is not a normal monday. certainly hasn't been a normal weekend for the city of charlottesville. the images have gone around the world now. a driver plowing into a group of protesters. several people were injured. dozens were injured. one woman died and that has made this a place of

earlier today, we saw about three people come by, just standing and looking at the memorial. the candle, the flowers and the messages scrawled into the pavement. a few moments ago, a young man wrote a message. didn't want to talk or si anything. but you could see the gravity of the situation here and indelibly etched into the minds of the people in charlottesville. people all over the place, interestingly enough, later today, a 40% chance of rain. perhaps the messages will be washed away. but the messages will be written out again. as a matter of fact, there's chalk here and a certain utility to the memorial. behind me is a box of kleenex. obviously a place of sad remembrance for a lot of people in the city of charlotte. we're live in charlottesville, derrick ward, news 4. aaron and eun x back to you. activists took to the streets outside of the w

charlottesville and protest the violence. they marched past the president's hotel downtown. along the way, many faulted the president for not explicitly denouncing white supremacists. people say the overall message unity. >> once you start that ball rolling, it's not going to stop. it's picking up speed again and it's going to get people going. >> the marchers ended at a stat statue honoring robert pike. they're calling on the national park service to bring it down. it ended peacefully. so far no reports of any arrests. there were arrests at some of the rallies and protests all around the country. >> people respond north dakota crowds to the violence in charlott charlottesville. >> angie goff joins us with more. >> aaron,,

on a couple of the demonstrations. these happen from coast to coast. let's begin in richmond. >> it's not clear what side this group is on. they're standing at the base of the statue of the confederate general, robert e. lee and you can hear them cheering and shouting. police said that they arrested one person but still they have not given us a reason why. then taking you to seattle. that's where people, you can see them spraying riot police with that silly string. you can hear them demanding letters. they were rallies in seattle overnight. police said they blocked the protesters to prevent any more violence from unfolding. as you can imagine, a lot of strong

we can say most of the protests across the nation were peaceful. now back to you. >> angie, thank you. coming up later in the broadcast, we'll go back to charlottesville to talk about the victims of this violence as we catch up on the latest developments in the nbc washington app. >> vigil is planned for a college-bound teen who was killed in the shooting. jamari sid ner was driving through the neighborhood in northeast d.c. when she was shot last week. she died on saturday. police say she wasn't the intended target. philip mcdaniel has been arrested but police are still looking for two other people. happening today, a renewed effort to reassure people that their water is safe to drink. wssc, montgomery county officials and water experts will speak about the groundwater some of you have noticed. the agency has been working to get rid of extra sediment in the water. it's been caused by the recent storms and the change in

treatment. they say the water is safe to drink in montgomery county. it's back to school in the district today, at least for some students who have a longer school year. students at 11 schools will head back to class this morning. the rest of d.c. schools will start the year next monday. also today, mayor muriel bowser will welcome back teachers in a morning ceremony. will spend an extra $121 million on education in 2018 and good luck to all the kids and the parents headed back to school today. a food lover's dream. summer restaurant week. some of the finest restaurants in and around d.c. are offering three-course meals for reduced prices. molette green is working for you and in the community. she's live at ritz in northwest with details on this. hey, molette. >> reporter: hey, good morning guys. aaron, i know how much you hof to eat. eun, i know how much you appreciate quality food. we're in the restaurant, in the kitchen of one of the hottest

shoulder becomes a lane about 15 minutes ago. so, you've got one-third of the roadway closed. silver, blue and orange lines, expect delays. due to an earlier train malfunction at a stadium armory. back to you. one person was arrested last night at a demonstration near vcu in richmond. the demonstrations were a response to the chaos that happened this weekend in charlottesville. >> meanwhile, the man accused of ramming his car into that group of counterprotesters will make his first court appearance today. he's charged with second degree murder for that violent crash. heather heyer died, 19 others were hurt. the "today" show will continue this story after our show. good morning from charlottesville.

protest. that's the statue of robert e. lee, the confederate general behind me. this is where we've seen the violence the last few days. today here in charlottesville, alex fields will be in court. he's accused of second degree murder of mowing down with his car a group of counterprotesters and that killed, as you probably know, a 32-year-old woman by the name of heather heyer. she was a paralegal here in charlottesville and she was one of those protesting the white nationalists who were here as well. dozens injured over the weekend on sunday for the most part, it was quiet here except for the instance in which one of these white nationalists, a leader, tried to hold a news conference. he was shouted down by counter hz protesters. he was assaulted. he was spit upon. one individual was arrested facing misdemeanor charges for that. the hope is that today the city will be much quieter. we'll have much more from

the vigils for the woman killed and what they're hoping for in the coming days coming up on "today." we're watching other top stories now. in guam, people are calling for peace in response to the possible threat from north korea. north korea says it has a detailed plan to fire four missiles on the island. overnight, guam's governor said it's as prepared as any american community can be. >>. you still have a chance to become a multimillionaire. there was no winner in saturday night's $356 million powerball drawing. the next drawing is wednesday night. the jackpot is now worth $430 million. a d.c. man is charged with stabbing his 81-year-old mother to death. d.c. police found ann cook suffering from multiple stab wounds inside her northeast apartment saturday night. she died at the hospital. police arrested her son yesterday. no word on a motive. 6:35 just about right now. >> there

this morning after a d.c. firefighter responding to a call actually ended up the victim. this happened in broad daylight at a house on 37th street southeast yesterday. a spokesperson for the fire department says four or five people at the home assaulted a firefighter. we're told he has mostly cuts and scrapes. other rescue units were called to the scene and took the injured firefighter to the hospital. if you want to get to work faster, you might hop on to a -- into a toll lane. >> but that comes at a cost that not everyone is willing to pay. adam tuss is live in tysons with a look at where else we could see the tolls one day. adam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. it seems like toll lanes are popping up all across our region. take a look here at the express lanes in northern virginia. of course, they run between springfield and north of the dulles toll road. but some want the lanes to go all the way around the capitol beltway. take a listen to virginia

recently. >> my dream would be at some point we ought to have express lanes going around the beltway. >> all the way around the beltway. take a look at the map of the beltway. 64 miles if you go all the way around. of course, it would be a lot of work to get done to make the express lanes stretch all the way around there. of course, you got to get maryland on board with putting in express lanes as well. maryland transportation leaders are actually studying this idea during a recent transportation tour. the idea came up and the region's long-term task force that lands transportation project is also taking a look at this possibility. now, it would be a ways off. but the fact that they've been talking about more toll lanes along the entire beltway tells you that our region's method of thinking about traffic is changing a bit. you want to get around traffic, you have to pay for it, guys. what do you think? weigh in on my

around the country. first derrick ward explains how charlottesville is healing this morning. derrick, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning again, aaron. this is obviously a part of the healing process. it is the nexus of grief. this is the intersection. fourth and water street behind me where that car plowed into the counterprotesters. heather heyer was the lone fatality in that incident. dozens of people were injured here. daybreak we'll likely see more additions to this memorial that have grown up in the streets. there are messages to heyer here, calling her a hero saying she marched for peace. there are also messages of peace inside the chalk that someone has left behind so that more messages can be added. see the flowers and the candles still burning. they've been burning since saturday as has the desire in the city of charlottesville. understand it and eventually to move on. derrick ward, news 4, back to you. this weekend's violence led to dozens of protests around our area. one of the biggest outside of the white house last night. demonstrators gathered to denounce hate and violence and to show their support for the people of charlottesville. >> there were loud demonstrations in richmond overnight along monument avenue. one person was arrested there. this crowd gathered at a statue of confederate general robert e. lee. it's not clear whether they were calling for the city to remove the statue or to leave it there. vice president mike pence is defending the president's response to all of this and went further in singling out white nationalists for the violence. >> we have no tolerance for hate and violence from white supremacists,

kkk. these dangerous fringe groups have no place in american public life and the american debate. we condemn them in the strongest possible terms. >> the vice president, who is touring latin american countries right now, accused the media of being more concerned with attacking president trump's response than condemning the violence. we're learning more about the victim in the deadly crash in charlottesville. >> more with heather heyer and response from her mother. >> both reacting to heather's death. she wasn't necessarily an activist but felt strongly about certain issues. >> heather's mom still struggling to understand what happened. >> i'm really not angry. i'm very sad. i'm very, very
